The use of hypnosis to treat suffering is probably as old as the history of man’s attempts to heal suffering. Although with different forms and names, hypnosis was also known among ancient primitive populations, as they used it not only for therapeutic purposes, but also for divination. Hypnosis phenomena were considered a gift or a special power of the divine, being applied through the prophet, shaman, doctor or priest. As stated by Katalin Varga, president of the European Society of Hypnosis, this book opens a new field of research on hypnosis from an innovative study survey on these methods which, starting from the origins in Western culture, extends to other regions of the world where they are still practiced today, retaining all the charm and power of ancient cultures and behaviours.
